PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island GOP Chairman Brandon Bell is taking heat for comments he made at the Republican National Convention this week.
State Democratic Party Chair Joseph M. McNamara, in a statement, criticized Bell, who, according to the Associated Press, made mention of the state’s beauty, but said Rhode Island constantly ranks at the bottom of national surveys, noting one ranking that said it’s the worst for business.
Bell blamed a corrupt Democratic machine he said has run the state for 80 years, according to the report.
Said McNamara, “Regardless of your politics, any Rhode Islander worth his or her salt should save the ‘cheap political shots’ for when they are not being carried on live, national television.”
“Here was a chance for any Rhode Islander to talk proudly about the many assets we hold – our miles of pristine waters; our independent people; our world-class creative economy, restaurants and colleges and universities – even our Great Blue Bug! Why would he take the low road to try to prove himself at the expense of all the good, hard-working people and organizations Rhode Island has to offer,” McNamara said. “For the parents, students, business owners and residents who make their home here, it was an embarrassing moment to have our home state so stridently ridiculed by one of its own.”
Bell delivered Rhode Island’s votes leading to Donald Trump’s nomination Tuesday night.
