Best CANstruction sculpture named, providing 4,000 cans

A tugboat sculpture designed and created by employees from DiPrete Engineering, Saccoccio & Associates Inc., E. Turgeon Construction Corp. and WEEI-FM 103.7 recently swept the biennial CANstruction Rhode Island design competition, winning the Juror’s Favorite, Best Meal and People’s Choice awards.

“Our team came together to make this happen, and we’re happy to help such a great cause,” said Leo Grenier of Saccoccio, who served as team captain for the winning group.

“Tug Away Hunger” was constructed from more than 4,000 cans of tuna, chili, soup and beans. It was one of six sculptures created by local companies and put on display at Providence Place from March 31 to April 13. All of the canned goods used in the competition were donated to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank was founded in 1982, and distributes food as well as nonfood household products through its network of more than 250 member-agency programs throughout the state. It also operates a mobile food pantry and a community kitchen. •
