PROVIDENCE – Fifteen startups from around the United States and the world will participate in the sixth session at Betaspring, the startup accelerator announced Thursday.
The 15 startups moved into Betaspring headquarters on Chestnut Street on Feb. 11 and “hit the ground running” to launch the 12-week, spring session, said a Betaspring release.
The most recent companies were selected from a pool of global applicants representing more than 20 different countries. “Every session is different but, this spring, Massachusetts takes the ‘Where’d they come from?’ lead with six of the 15 companies hailing from the Bay State,” said a Betaspring release from Chief of Staff and Nerd Whisperer Melissa Withers. The rest of the companies come from New York, Rhode Island, Colorado, Washington, D.C., England and India.
The three India-based startups that have headed to Providence for this season’s session are the first from their country to join Betaspring. “Our only regret is that the lads arrived smack in the middle of Blizzard Nemo, greeted with snow, wind and hotels without electricity!” said the release, adding: “With a little help, they got through it and are now thriving in New England’s startup scene.”
After the teams arrived in mid-February, they jumped right into the Betaspring experience with five days of back-to-back meetings the accelerator calls “Mentor Speed Dating.” Over the five days, the CEOs of each startup met individually with more than 50 mentors, investors and potential customers to “test and refine their company narratives and get rapid exposure to some of the most important nodes on the Betaspring network.”
The Betaspring Spring 2013 companies and their stated business models:
Betaspring will officially present the companies at the spring session’s Open House, scheduled for the session’s March 21 mid-point at Betaspring headquarters.
“Come meet the companies, hear their pitches and spend quality time with Betaspring mentors, alumni, and movers and shakers from the startup scene,” said the release, reminding interesting parties that the Open House even has sold out three sessions in a row, so anyone interested should claim their ticket early.
