Biscotti baked from the heart

The tagline could tell it all: Dunk! Crunch! Yum!

That’s the mantra of Bellicchi’s Best Handmade Biscotti LLC, a new biscotti company created by Kathleen Bellicchi that started last summer. Prior to launching the business, however, Bellicchi baked biscotti for special occasions for more than 40 years.

But it became more than a passion when her husband developed early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Bellicchi would pull out the mixer whenever he got agitated and the two would start making biscotti.

“It seemed to erase the divide there for a while,” she said.

The soothing ritual resulted in more biscotti than could be consumed, which is when Bellicchi thought she might be able to sell it wholesale.

Her biscotti, known for its thin and crunchy texture, comes in three variations: almond-fennel orange, cocoa nibs and macadamia lemon.

Her first customer was the grocery giant Whole Foods, and she sells in other locations throughout the state. •
