BLUE CROSS & BLUE SHIELD OF RHODE ISLAND and University Medicine have announced a new, three-year shared-savings agreement.

PROVIDENCE – A new shared-savings agreement between Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and physicians’ group University Medicine will boost health care quality and slow rising costs, the two organizations announced Wednesday.
The three-year agreement aims to emphasize primary care doctors, reduce excessive hospitalizations and enhance the patient experience and care.
Among the main components are expanded nighttime and weekend hours at University Medicine, a new health advocate to help patients understand the healthcare system, stronger coordination with behavioral health providers, and an expansion of a patient-centered medical home program to include specialists in a new model of health care.
The insurance company “is committed to aligning incentives that place the patient’s needs at the center, provide the highest quality care, and improve the overall financial health of the system,” Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO, said in a statement. “By partnering with organizations like University Medicine, real change is possible.”
