Phill Trotter and Tom Nimmo founded Rumpus Entertainment in June because they could no longer accommodate the growing number of Providence board game enthusiasts in their homes.
“Board gaming in Providence is happening, but a lot of it is going on in people’s living rooms. …We want to bring people out of the living rooms and … make it more of a community,” said Nimmo.
The pair found a space in Providence where they host game nights for dues-paying members, who contribute $20 per month.
To expand the community, Rumpus Entertainment is open to the public on Wednesdays and newcomers are invited to browse and play Trotter and Nimmo’s library of more than 400 board games.
Rumpus Entertainment also wants to diversify the board game-playing demographic.
“It’s been known as a hobby just for … guys in their basements, we want that stigma [to end]. One-third of our members are women and we don’t want anyone to feel they don’t belong,” said Trotter. •
