Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence elects new board members, names Youth of the Year

PROVIDENCE – During the organization’s 148th annual meeting, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, the oldest continually operating club in the nation, named Cesar Pimental its Youth of the Year and appointed five new governors to its board.

Introduced by Thomas P. Fay, president of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence board of governors, the new executives are: Eric Carlson, Rockland Trust; James Foster, Cox Communications; Darren Jodoin, Paradigm Media Consultants; Sean T. O’Leary, O’Leary Law Associates; and Michael J. Solomon, Customers Bank.

During his acceptance speech, Pimental, a senior at Classical High School, talked about how the Boys & Girls Clubs taught him to be a confident leader.

Pimental, who was accepted to eight colleges, now works closely with the organization’s Youth Employment Program teaching younger kids about the importance of hard work and perseverance.

Nicole Dufresne, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, said Pimental is inspirational and a model of the type of youth mentored at Boys & Girls Clubs.

“Our unique programs and activities support the development of the life skills and confidence that open doors of opportunity not always available to children living in Providence’s low-income neighborhoods, and that helps to create brighter futures,” she said.

As the Providence Youth of the Year Pimental will advance to compete against other, similarly recognized Rhode Island youth for the opportunity to represent Rhode Island at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Youth of the Year ceremony.
