Bradley Hospital awards inaugural recognitions

EAST PROVIDENCE – Bradley Hospital, the nation’s first children’s psychiatric hospital, which is now celebrating its 85th year in operation, recently awarded the inaugural Bradley Hospital Humanitarian of the Year Award as well as the first-ever Bradley Hospital Lifetime Achievement Award.

Cranston resident Carol A. Peterson was awarded the Bradley Hospital Humanitarian of the Year Award. Peterson, who serves as vice chair of the Bradley Hospital Foundation board of trustees, pledged $1 million in support of Laufer Building’s main entrance renovation. This represents the single largest gift received by the hospital since its founding.

Bradley Hospital President Daniel J. Wall said: “No one embodies the definition of a humanitarian more than Carol. …[Her] unparalleled generosity is matched only by her incredible kindness and devotion to helping others.”

The Bradley Hospital Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Susan and David Brown of Providence, who led the 2009 Uniquely Bradley Campaign, which saw the modernization of the hospital’s inpatient unit. In addition, David served as chair of Bradley Hospital Foundation board of trustees for over a decade.

Of the couple, Wall said: “You will not find more passionate advocates for children’s mental health than David and Susan; their appreciation for helping children struggling with life’s challenges define who they are as people.”

Founded in 1931, Bradley Hospital, located in East Providence, was the nation’s first psychiatric hospital devoted exclusively for children and adolescents. It remains a nationally recognized center for children’s mental health care, training and research. Bradley Hospital is a member of the Lifespan health system and is a teaching hospital for The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
