Why did you select your profession? Working in epidemiology combines my love for science with the health and social justice values that I’ve always held dearly. During my undergraduate training I volunteered at YouthCO, Canada’s largest youth-driven HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C organization. That experience drove my interest in understanding the social determinants of drug use and addiction, particularly among young people.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received? Surround yourself with people who enjoy what they do and are passionate about research. There’s nothing more rewarding in [academia] than solving a problem collaboratively.

What is your favorite Rhode Island restaurant? North in Providence. I’m from Vancouver, so their wonderfully creative dishes remind me of izakayas (Japanese-style gastropubs) back home. •
