Brewing company may be on tap for N. Providence

NORTH PROVIDENCE – The founder of the Providence Brewing Co. wants to open a brewery on Mineral Spring Avenue.

Efren Hidalgo is looking to take what he’s learned over a decade of brewing at home and open a new brewery in a commercial complex at 1920 Mineral Spring Ave. by September, The Valley Breeze reported Aug. 9. Rhode Island has seen significant gains in the craft-brewing industry over the past few years, said Hidalgo, and the town now has the opportunity to get in on the movement.

To open the brewery, Hidalgo and his business partners need town officials to amend the local zoning ordinance to allow a brewpub. The Town Council earlier this month voted to send the proposal to its ordinance committee and request a recommendation from the North Providence Zoning Board on the proposed zone change.

Hidalgo said he’s excited to tap into a craft beer market that’s now hitting its stride in Rhode Island. He said he envisions beer lovers traveling a brewing corridor of sorts, from Providence Brewing Co. down to Pawtucket’s four breweries. •
