Brian LaPlante is not allergic to hard work. When the Waterville, Maine, native founded a Providence law firm with a partner a dozen years ago, the fledgling practice had a major problem: It had no clients or employees.

LaPlante’s solution was to throw himself into the firm to establish client relationships and become an expert in his field. It took 80-hour workweeks, and taking advantage of growing communications trends by making himself available to clients through cellphones and email on nights and weekends.

Now 38 years old, the managing partner of LaPlante Sowa Goldman has developed experience in real estate and business law, counting among his clients multinational corporations, construction firms and financial institutions. His peers have recognized his work, recently bestowing upon him the Martindale Hubbell AV Preeminent rating, an evaluation based upon lawyers and judges anonymously ranking him among the best in his profession.

Now that he has reached a certain level of success, LaPlante and his partners want to help others in the profession find their way in the legal world. The firm consistently employs college and law school students, frequently through its participation in Roger Williams University Law School’s summer internship program.

A husband and father of two, LaPlante also applies his skills to bettering the community. He is a member of the Scituate School Committee and head coach of several youth teams.

He credits mentors – including teachers, coaches, professors, lawyers and judges – for igniting his passion. “I am devoted to passing it on, especially to young people in their formative years,” he wrote. •
