NEW BEDFORD – The five chambers of commerce based in Bristol County, Mass., have signed a memorandum of understanding to work cooperatively to revive the region’s tourism efforts.

The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce, Taunton Area Chamber of Commerce, Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce in Mansfield, and the United Regional Chamber of Attleboro are joining forces to leverage resources and encourage economic development, according to a press release.

Part of the work will be in reviving the Southeastern Massachusetts Convention and Visitors Bureau, which serves as the official regional tourism council of Bristol County, Mass., which has suffered recent financial problems during the economic downturn and loss of state tourism grants.

The CVB is responsible for developing regional advertising, public relations, brochures and other marketing initiatives.

The Massachusetts tourism industry accounts for more than 3,000 jobs and $400 million in revenue for Bristol County.

The chambers have hosted several forums with hospitality and tourism industry professionals and have worked to recruit a board of directors of the CVB.

Under the terms of the memorandum of understanding, the chambers of commerce have agreed to cooperatively develop and implement a marketing plan for the region, apply for state tourism grants, help secure private matching dollars, and provide administrative and operational support to the regional tourism council.
