BRISTOL – For the second year in a row, Bristol, home to Roger Williams University, is one of the safest college towns in America.
Bristol was 10th on the list released Wednesday of the 30 safest college towns from Safewise.com, a website that provides home security reviews, comparisons and advice. Bristol moved up six spots from last year’s ranking of 16th.
The website notes that Bristol is home to the country’s oldest Independence Day celebration and has had a police force since 1890.
“At Roger Williams University, students can use the Rave Guardian app to turn their smartphone into a personal safety device. The app is a safety timer, a panic button and a way to alert friends, family or emergency services that you are in trouble,” Safewise stated.
Safewise used the most recent FBI crime data statistics from 2014 to create its list, weighing them against population and other factors. It also researched relevant safety, health and educational programs.
Topping the list was Winona, Minn., home to Winona State University.
Closer to home, several towns in Massachusetts made the list: Seventh-place Amherst, home to three colleges, including the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Waltham at 23rd, home to Bentley University and Brandeis University; and 27th place Westfield, known for Westfield State University.
