U.S. News: Brown No. 99 among world’s top 500 universities

PROVIDENCE – Brown University is ranked 99th among the world’s top 500 universities, according to a list released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings compare universities with other schools around the world academically and in terms of research, according to the magazine’s website.

Brown moved up seven spots from last year’s ranking of 106.

Again this year, the top three on the list are Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Berkeley.

U.S. News & World Report starts with 750 schools to locate the top 500. Eligibility for that pool started with the top 200 universities in the results of Thomson Reuters’ global reputation survey. Next the list included those schools with the most faculty article publications during the most recent five years. Methodology also incorporates 10 indicators and weights that measure global research performance.

Brown earned a global score of 66, a global research reputation of 88 and a regional research reputation of 38. The university ranked 171th for publications, 117th for citations, and 125th for highly cited papers, according to the website.
