Brown, PC, Wheaton make Kiplinger’s ‘best value’ list

PROVIDENCE – Brown University, Providence College and Wheaton College all have been named to Kiplinger’s annual list of the 300 best value colleges and universities.
Kiplinger’s, a Washington, D.C.-based finance newsletter, said the schools that made the list meet its definition of a “quality education at an affordable price.” It said it studied how competitive admission to a school is and how efficiently it gets students to their degree. It said it also looked at schools with reasonable price tags, generous financial aid or both. And, it added in future earnings, to give an idea of post-graduation salary.
The salary is based on the median earnings of workers who started at a particular college 10 years earlier and who received federal financial aid. Whether the student graduated or went on to graduate school is not considered, according to Kiplinger’s.
Brown ranked highest at No. 21, with an annual cost per year of $66,106, average debt at graduation of $22,197, and salary for graduates of $59,700.
Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., was No. 239, with an annual cost per year of $62,452, average debt at graduation of $32,344, and salary for graduates of $44,100.
Providence College came in at No. 285, with an annual cost per year of $61,700, average debt at graduation of $37,740, and salary for graduates of $57,700.

Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania topped the best value list with a total cost per year of $64,840, average debt at graduation of $18,262, and salary for graduates of $48,500.
