NEW YORK – Brown and Roger Williams universities ranked on The Daily Meal’s list of the 52 Best Colleges for Food in America.
The Daily Meal, a national food website owned by Spanfeller Media Group, ranked Brown University 30th and Roger Williams University 46th on its list.
The review for Roger William’s Bristol-based campus lauded the school’s food management company, Bon Appétit, as well as its commitment to using fresh ingredients and sustainable meats and seafood.
The food at Brown University’s Sharpe Refectory, often called “the Ratty” by students, won the school the 30th slow on The Daily Meal’s list.
“Offering buffet-style dining, this spot is home to themed dinners several times a year, and doles out birthday cake on the last Fridays of each month,” said The Daily Meal article, adding that the dining hall offers plenty of vegetarian, kosher and halal dining options.
“Reusable containers, farmer partnerships, and student composting are just a few of Brown’s sustainability initiatives,” said The Daily Meal. “The university also hosts a farmers market Thursdays in the fall that supports local food.”
To come up with its list of the 52 Best College for Food in America, The Daily Meal looked at college dining services awards, respected college lists like the Princeton Review, news stories as well as their own interviews. “Our focus was not only on the actual food, but schools’ dining programs as a whole,” said the media outlet.

Virginia Tech, which has received awards from the National Association of College and University Food Services, ranked number 1 on The Daily Meal’s list.
