PROVIDENCE – A new building for applied mathematics at Brown University is under construction, with completion expected in December of 2015.
Work began Monday on the three-story, 13,000-square-foot building at the corner of Hope and George streets, the university said in a press release. Most of the math division is housed nearby at 182 George St. The new building is part of the School of Engineering expansion, which will be complete by February of 2018.
Brown is being careful to ensure that the structure of the new applied mathematics building fits in with the character of the residential neighborhood, said Michael McCormick, assistant vice president for facilities management.
“This is a site where buildings transition from the rather large scale of nearby research buildings to the residential scale and character of an important historic district,” McCormick said. “The design of the new building needs to feel comfortable in both settings. This is one of the most difficult design challenges we’ve faced in a long time.”
Architecture Research Office, a firm based in New York City, is overseeing design. Shawmut Design and Construction is managing construction. Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, landscape architects, will provide green space between the new structure and the existing applied mathematics building.
The School of Engineering expansion’s new building will be built beginning in November of 2015 to the west of the Barus and Holley building, the existing engineering facility, along Manning Walk, opposite Prince Engineering Lab. Four small residential-style buildings, two of which house several applied mathematics faculty and students, will be removed.
