PROVIDENCE – Brown University was recognized for having one of the 50 most amazing libraries in the country, according to a list released Monday by College Rank, a ranking service for colleges and universities.
Brown’s John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, which came in at No. 33 on the list, opened in 1964 and was noted for being the the primary teaching and research library for humanities, social sciences and fine arts at the university. Named after John D. Rockefeller Jr., who graduated in 1897, it has had three renovations over the years, in 2009, 2012 and 2014, which added two rooms and a lab.
The Cook Legal Research Library at the University of Michigan ranked No. 1. It was described by College Rank as “magnificent and grand” with spires, stained glass windows and metal works. Built in 1931 to hold approximately 350,000 volumes, it expanded in the 1950s – four floors were added.
College Rank gathered data concerning student opportunities, prestigious collections, architecture and history to create the list.
Kevin Shull, who compiled the list, said, “There are scores of amazing college and university libraries in the United States. Narrowing to 50 libraries was not an easy task. These 50 libraries are all true stand outs in multiple areas.”
In 2013, Rhode Island School of Design’s Fleet Library made BestMastersPrograms.org’s list of “The 50 Most Amazing University Libraries in the World.”
