PROVIDENCE – Brown University retained its No. 8 ranking in the latest version of Forbes’ list of “America’s Top Colleges,” released earlier this week. The Ivy League school’s performance continues a positive trend, as it has moved from No. 19 on the list in 2012 to No. 12 in 2013, No. 13 in 2014 and No. 8 last year.
As part of the list, Forbes also ranked Brown at No. 6 for research universities, No. 6 in the Northeast and No. 14 for “Grateful Grads,” as well as giving the school a financial grade of A+. According to the publication, the total annual cost is $65,380.
Once again, Forbes noted that Brown “has the reputation of being the most eccentric and liberal of the Ivies,” as well as the first college in the United States to admit students “regardless of their religious affiliation.”
Brown is not a stranger to such rankings, having achieved high placements in the last year on the following lists:

Forbes’ ranking of 660 school in the United States focuses on “output” versus “input,” the media outlet said. Thus while many traditional college rankings look at how difficult it is for a high school student to be admitted to a given school, using class rank, standardized test scores and other such metrics, the Forbes methodology, applied in partnership with the Washington-based Center for College Affordability and Productivity, looks at student satisfaction, graduation rates, debt after graduation and post-graduate success, among other data.
Topping the 2016 list was Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., followed by Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also in Cambridge. Finishing up the top 10 were Yale University (No. 6), Pomona College (No. 7 and last year’s No. 1), Brown, Wesleyan University (No. 9) and Swarthmore College (No. 10).
