Brown professor wins $5K caregiver prize

PAWTUCKET – A national nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the patient-caregiver relationship has named Dr. Pradeep Chopra, a clinical assistant professor at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, its Compassionate Caregiver of the Year.
A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Chopra treats patients from around the country for rare pain disorders at the Interventional Pain Management Center of Rhode Island in Pawtucket. At a dinner on Nov. 18 in Boston, the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare awarded Chopra a $5,000 cash prize before an audience of approximately 2,000 people.
The center’s executive director , Julie Rosen, called Dr. Chopra a model for “what compassionate care is and what it can accomplish.”
Chopra said the key elements of compassionate care are hope, care and love. Hope cannot be prescribed on a slip of paper and filled at a pharmacy, he said in a statement.
“It is looking into your patient’s eyes and making a promise that you will do your best to help them,” he added. •
