Brown regains ranking in U.S. News and World Report’s 2016 Best Colleges list

PROVIDENCE – Brown University regained its ranking as No. 14 in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2016 Best Colleges list released Wednesday, while several schools in the region improved their rankings.
Brown had slipped from No. 14 to No. 16 last year, but this year improved to its previous listing.
The University of Rhode Island held steady at No. 161 this year, after having retreated from its previous position of No. 152.
The report defines national universities as offering a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs, while producing groundbreaking research.
Among North regional universities, Salve Regina University increased the most in the rankings, to No. 36 this year from No. 50 last year. Johnson & Wales University improved to No. 58 from No. 65 last year, while Roger Williams University moved up to No. 36 from No. 41.
Nearby, the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth moved up to No. 83 from No. 87.
Providence College and Bryant University held on to their respective rankings of No. 2 and No. 11. Rhode Island College slid from No. 122 to No. 131.
Regional universities offer undergraduate programs and some master’s programs but few doctoral programs, according to the report.
In the national liberal arts colleges category, Wheaton College improved to No. 57 from No. 69, while Stonehill College dipped to No. 116 from No. 105.
The New England Institute of Technology was unranked in the regional colleges category; the Rhode Island School of Design also was unranked in the art schools category.
U.S. News based the annual rankings on analysis of approximately 1,800 school’s missions and programs, including graduation rate data, tuition, class sizes, acceptance rates, average debt, retention rates, faculty resources and more.
Princeton University remains No. 1 in the Best National Universities category, while Williams College again tops the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges list. The University of California—Berkeley is the No. 1 Top Public School among National Universities.
For the first time, the United States Naval Academy entered the top 10 on the National Liberal Arts Colleges list.
