PROVIDENCE – The Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University celebrated its 25th anniversary Sept. 24 at the Steel Yard in Providence to commemorate its work in fostering collaborations among students, faculty and community partners.
The center was founded in 1986 by then-university President Howard Swearer, who sought to demonstrate the university’s commitment to public service. The center now encompasses dozens of programs in advising, community partnerships, fellowships and faculty engagement.
More than 700 Brown students participated in the center’s community programs last year.
More than 4,000 Rhode Island public-school students will participate in Swearer Center programs this year. Services in that program include SAT preparation, essay writing and financial-aid programming. •
