SMITHFIELD — Bryant University will introduce a creative and applied arts concentration beginning in the fall semester, offering students the opportunity to study creative writing, graphic design, music, performance and visual art, the university announced on Thursday.
“This new concentration responds to increasing interest in foregrounding creativity in Bryant and in the professional and academic worlds generally,” Maura Coughlin, professor of visual studies and art history at Bryant, said in a statement.

In addition to expanding Bryant’s course offerings, the new concentration will help “cultivate effective communicators and innovative problem solvers,” the university said in prepared remarks.
Courses in the concentration enable students to “locate creative expression in cultural contexts” by combining hands-on experience with the application of analytical skills and building upon courses offered by the department of English and cultural studies, said Coughlin.

Students will hone critical thinking skills and learn both theoretical and historical approaches to a range of art forms — spoken, written and visual communication — while incorporating the latest technologies into their studies.

The creative and applied arts concentration will help prepare students for a variety of careers at community arts organizations; museums; nonprofits and design, theater and internet companies, among others, the university said in a press release.
