SMITHFIELD – Bryant University is adding two new master’s degrees and two new undergraduate majors to its 2013 academic calendar, the school announced Tuesday.

Bryant’s College of Arts and Sciences will add two master’s degrees in communication and global environmental studies in the fall of 2013. With these two additions, Bryant will have launched six new advanced degree programs in just over a year.

Students seeking a master’s of arts in communication can choose between three concentrations: health communication, organizational communication or an area of the student’s choosing.

In the new master’s of science in global environmental studies, the school intends to prepare students to work in any international setting and includes study abroad opportunities.

“The flexibility of the program allows graduate students with business backgrounds to prepare themselves for environmental management careers while enabling scientifically trained students to address international challenges from a sustainable systems point of view,” Gaytha Langlois, chair of Bryant’s department of science and technology, said in prepared remarks.

On top of the new master’s degrees, the College of Arts and Sciences will offer two new undergraduate majors next fall: social entrepreneurship and forensic science.

Students pursuing the social entrepreneurship concentration will study social problems and their sources, and work to develop solutions in areas of education, health care, immigration and community development, among others.

The forensic science program is intended to prepare students for postgraduate study in areas including trauma assessment, forensic photography, ballistics, medical entomology, soil and chemical analysis, biochemistry, geographical information systems and mapping, bioimaging, DNA analysis, pharmaceutical science or medical studies.

According to the school, enrollment of these majors is open to students enrolled in any of the university’s programs.

“These new graduate and undergraduate programs are part of Bryant’s signature educational experience, which emphasizes real-world applications and cultivates a global perspective,” David Lux, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said in a statement.
