Google Drive, Facebook and LinkedIn have been named the most useful apps by small business owners in SurePayroll’s third annual favorite tech tools survey.
SurePayroll provides online payroll services to small businesses nationwide.
As part of the July 2016 SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard, business owners ranked their top tech tools and apps in categories of cloud storage providers, organization apps, social networks, social media management, customer relationship management and email marketing software.
The survey found that Google Drive was the most used app among small business owners – for both organization and cloud storage. Facebook and LinkedIn were cited as “far more useful for business” than other social media outlets such as Twitter or Snapchat. Google Plus also ranked higher as a social media platform for business than Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or Pinterest, the survey found.
Other important tools included Mail Chimp for emailing marketing, Dropbox and Salesforce for customer relationship management.
“Our average customer tells us, for example, that they use Mail Chimp to communicate with customers, Google Drive to store important documents and SurePayroll to pay their employees. Those are the building blocks, and beyond that upgrading technology becomes costly,” SurePayroll General Manager Andy Roe said in a statement. “Small businesses with only a few employees are typically not going to have a lot of resources for extensive technology systems. Fortunately, there are some really beneficial, low-cost tools available.”
Here are some highlights of the survey:

  • Cloud storage – Google Drive (last year’s winner was Dropbox, which came in second this year)
  • Email marketing software – Mail Chimp (last year’s winner was Constant Contact, which came in second this year)
  • Organization app – Google Drive, followed by Evernote, Microsoft Outlook/OneNote, Trello and Slack
  • Social network – Facebook, followed by LinkedIn, Google Plus, Twitter and Instagram
  • Social media management – Hootsuite, followed by Hearsay Social, Buffer, Sprout Social and TweetDeck
  • Customer relationship management – Salesforce, followed by Microsoft Dynamics, SugarCRM, Zoho and Act
