THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Central Falls High School teacher David Upegui has been honored by world biotechnology leader Amgen Inc. with the 2013 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence.

Upegui, a 10th, 11th and 12th grade science teacher in Central Falls, is among nine recipients of the award, which is given out in locations where Amgen has operating sites – California, Colorado, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Washington and Canada. He was surprised with the honor at a school assembly late last month.

The Science Teaching Excellence awards program was designed by the biotechnology company’s philanthropic arm – the Amgen Foundation – to recognize and honor extraordinary science teachers at the K-12 level.

Each teacher receives an unrestricted $5,000 grant and their schools receive a restricted $5,000 grant which can be used for the expansion or enhancement of a school science program, science resources or the professional development of the school’s science teachers.

Nominations are solicited every fall and winning teachers are selected based on a variety of criteria including: ability to effectively engage students while “deepening their scientific understanding,” the plan for the use of the grant money and a letter of recommendation.
