WOONSOCKET – For the second year in a row, CVS Health Corp. made the top 10 in the Fortune 500 list of America’s top companies by revenue.
CVS, with annual revenue of $153.3 billion, a 10 percent increase over last year, jumped three spots to No. 7.
Walmart again topped the list, followed by Exxon Mobil Corp., Apple Inc., Berkshire Hathaway Inc., McKesson Corp. and UnitedHealth Group.
According to Fortune, the 500 companies represent two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product with $12 trillion in revenue, $840 billion in profit and $17 trillion in market value. They also employ 27.9 million people worldwide.
Fortune Magazine said CVS is “still feeling the pinch from its 2014 decision to drop cigarettes,” but said it “continues to leverage the positive [public relations] from that move to convince more and more employers that it is truly a health care company, allowing it to win new business for its Caremark pharmacy benefits manager.”
The magazine noted CVS recently took over Target Corp.’s 1,700 in-store drug stores, and is launching curbside pickup as well.
Other Rhode Island companies on the list include Textron Inc., an aerospace and defense company based in Providence at 209th, which climbed 10 spots from last year, and had $13.4 billion in revenue, a 3.3 percent drop compared with last year; United Natural Foods Inc. in Providence at 335th, a 62-spot jump from last year with $8.2 billion in revenue, a 20.5 percent increase from last year; and list newcomer Citizens Financial Group, which ranked 486th for its $5.3 billion in revenue, a 1.2 percent decrease over the year.
“As we continue to grow the company and improve our performance, we are pleased by this recognition from Fortune,” Bruce Van Saun, chairman and CEO, Citizens Financial Group, said in a statement.
