CVS employees clean up 11 tons of coastline trash

Posted 7/19/13

WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp. employees collected roughly 25,000 pounds, or 11 tons, of trash in shoreline cleanup efforts across the nation this year.

The effort resulted from a partnership with Ocean Conservancy, an environmental advocacy group, and entailed major cleanup events in Bristol; Chicago; Dallas; Key Biscayne, Fla.; and San Diego. They were intended both to make coastlines and riverbanks healthier and to raise awareness about the importance of clean waterways.

CVS employees picked up approximately 34,000 pieces of trash from the five shorelines. Among the most unusual items were couches, shopping carts, sinks and tractor tires.

The CVS campaign is part of Ocean Conservancy’s broader International Coastal Cleanup, which last year collected about 10 million pounds of trash from shorelines around the world. The most common items in that total were cigarettes, food packaging and plastic bottles.

“Trash jeopardizes the health of the ocean, coastline, economy and people and requires a collective movement to make the biggest difference," Amelia Montjoy, Ocean Conservancy’s vice president of resource development, said in a statement. “We have a profound stake in a healthy ocean that is free of trash and marine debris, and through our partnership with CVS Caremark, we are one step closer to fulfilling this mission.”
