WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp. has launched its first MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics at CVS/pharmacy locations in Sacramento and Elk Grove, Calif., the latest of more than 50 MinuteClinics throughout the Golden State.

The MinuteClinics at 1350 Florin Road in Sacramento and at 5040 Laguna Blvd. in Elk Grove are the first clinic locations to open in the Sacramento metropolitan area, CVS Caremark said, and the retail pharmacy chain plans to open a third MinuteClinic in Fair Oaks, Calif., in October.

“The addition of these new clinics in the Sacramento market expands MinuteClinic’s presence in Northern California following the Bay Area launch in fall 2013,” said Dr. Andrew Sussman, president of MinuteClinic and senior vice president and associate chief medical officer for CVS Caremark. “There is a need for more accessible and affordable health care in California, and the demand for MinuteClinic services will grow due, in part, to the shortage of primary care physicians, the aging Baby Boomer population and the influx of newly insured patients through the Affordable Care Act.”

CVS now operates MinuteClinics in the Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County/Inland Empire and Bay Area markets in California. The first clinics opened in Southern California in 2007, CVS said.

Nationwide, CVS has more than 850 MinuteClinics in 29 states and the District of Columbia, which are open seven days a week with no appointment necessary and are staffed by nurse practitioners.

In May, the R.I. Department of Health approved CVS Caremark’s application to the first seven MinuteClinic facilities in Rhode Island. CVS plans to add 150 new clinics nationwide this year and 1,500 clinics by 2017.
