WOONSOCKET – CVS Caremark Corp.’s CVS/pharmacy has released a new feature for its CVS Mobile application, the Drug Interaction Checker. The new feature allows users to check for possible drug interactions between prescriptions and over the counter products by comparing the two goods on their smartphones.
The feature will use a database of drug information to identify possible drug interactions and permits users a variety of options to input prescription medication and over the counter products for comparison. Users can import their prescriptions to the application or manually type in drug information. Users can also scan thousands of products’ barcodes using their smartphone camera or enter the name of the product or its active ingredients.
“Our goal at CVS/pharmacy is to continually find new ways of helping people on their path to better health, and this new feature demonstrates how we intend to harness the power of mobile technology as a cutting-edge health resource that addresses real needs of our customers,” CVS’s Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Officer Brian Tilzer said in a statement.
“Now customers will have more information right at their fingertips, so they can make more informed decisions or seek advice from a pharmacist as needed,” he added.
The feature addresses the significant effects drugs and food can have on the efficacy of medication. Considering roughly half of Americans take at least one prescription drug a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control, helping clients understand how products interact is a priority of CVS/pharmacy.
The CVS Mobile application also allows users to refill prescriptions, order photo prints and locate pharmacies.
