CVS/pharmacy to raise funds for cancer research

WOONSOCKET – CVS/pharmacy will raise funds in stores during November’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month to support research through Stand Up To Cancer.
This is the first time the charity, a nonprofit program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, has collaborated with a retail pharmacy company for an in-store fundraising campaign, CVS said. From now through Nov. 22, CVS customers can make a $1 or $3 donation at the register in all CVS/pharmacy locations and online at www.cvs.com/SU2C.
Stand Up To Cancer aims to accelerate the pace of cancer research to get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives. CVS has made a three-year, $10 million commitment to the charity.
Cancer kills almost 1,600 Americans every day, or nearly a person a minute, but there are an estimated 13.7 million cancer survivors living in the United States.
“As a pharmacy innovation company, CVS Health works with a number of nonprofit organizations that align with our purpose of helping people on their path to better health,” said Helena Foulkes, president of CVS/pharmacy. “Together, and with the support of our customers and colleagues, we can have a positive impact on the lives of people living with cancer and help to bring new and effective treatments to patients as quickly as possible.”
These donations specifically support the charity’s collaborative research model, in which teams of investigators across disciplines and institutions join in moving research from the laboratory to the patient, the companies said.
Stand Up To Cancer Cofounder Katie Couric said the support from CVS is a key contribution.
“By offering shoppers such an easy way to donate, CVS Health will help SU2C continue funding the most promising cancer research, as well as remind millions of consumers of our core message: that each and every one of us can make a difference in the effort to turn more cancer patients into cancer survivors,” she said.
CVS stopped selling cigarettes and tobacco products at its 7,700 pharmacies on Sept. 3, extending the company’s commitment to helping people “lead tobacco-free lives,” since tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer, the company said.
