Canal Street apartments get conceptual approval

PROVIDENCE – A revised development proposal to design and construct an apartment building over a parking lot on Canal Street received conceptual approval from the city’s Downtown Design Review Committee on Dec. 5.

The property owner had initially proposed an 11-story building at the site, 169 Canal St. That original design was scrapped and the new construction is now envisioned as a 13-story apartment building. It is being pursued by Vision Properties, of Conshohocken, Pa.

The conceptual design prepared by Providence-based DBVW Architects would include 13 studio units on each floor of residential apartments, with square footage as small as 304 square feet, as well as larger one- and two-bedroom units.

The property is owned by MSI Holdings LLC. The registered agent for the company is David C. Tapalian.

Chris Ise, a city planner working with the committee, said a public hearing for final design approval will be held in January. •
