Cape Air to launch seasonal service to Block Island
THE BRITTEN-NORMAN Islander is a nine-passenger aircraft specifically suited to land at airports with short runways, such as Block Island Airport. Cape Air announced Monday it would begin service out to Block Island from T.F. Green Airport and Westchester County Airport starting May 22.
PROVIDENCE – Beginning May 22, Cape Air will offer daily flights to and from Block Island, with service out of T.F. Green Airport and Westchester County Airport in White Plains, N.Y.
Block Island joins Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard on Cape Air’s itinerary of seasonal service destinations flown out of T.F. Green. Cape Air flight service to those two islands from T.F. Green began 16 years ago.
“After several years of collaboration with the R.I. Airport Corporation, we are thrilled to be able to start seasonal, scheduled service to Block Island,” said Linda Markham, president of Cape Air, in a statement. “Cape Air specializes in connecting passengers to some of the most desirable destinations in the U.S. and Caribbean – Block Island fits our model perfectly.”
Cape Air, based in Hyannis, Mass., is one of the largest independent regional airlines in the United States and ferries more than 735,000 passengers annually aboard its fleet of Cessna 402s, Britten-Norman Islanders and ATR-42s.
Britten-Norman Islanders are specifically suited to land at airports with short runways, such as Block Island Airport. The Islander is a high-wing, twin-engine aircraft that seats nine passengers.
Due to demand, service to Block Island will begin earlier than the seasonal flights to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, which will start in mid-June, Cape Air said. Seasonal service will end in mid-October.
“Cape Air is a valued travel partner, offering seasonal service to the cape and islands for over 15 years,” said Kelly Fredericks, president and CEO of the R.I. Airport Corporation. “Block Island passengers on Cape Air will have access to connecting service on other carriers and commuter rail service to Providence and Boston via the convenience of T. F. Green Airport.”
