NORTH KINGSTOWN – Cape Wind Associates LLC has a tentative agreement to lease 14 acres at Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown as a staging area to build its planned 130-turbine windfarm off the coast of Massachusetts, the Quonset Development Corporation said Wednesday.

The lease, if approved by the QDC board and executed by Cape Wind (they would have a 12-month option to do so), would run one year with two additional one-year extension options, Quonset said in a Wednesday evening news release.

Mark Rodgers, a spokesman for Cape Wind, said the Quonset lease is “one part of our overall ports strategy.”

The QDC board is scheduled to vote on the lease at its meeting on Tuesday, July 15.

Cape Wind has said the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal now under construction was the preferred staging area for the project, but its federal permits still list Quonset, according to project opponent group the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound.

Cape Wind has been fought passionately by some Massachusetts residents who claim it will ruin the beauty of Nantucket Sound and harm recreational and fishing opportunities there.

The proposed Quonset lease would include 11.6 acres in the Quonset Business Park’s Parcel 17 and another 2.2 acres at Terminal 4 in the Port of Davisville, which includes a deepwater port with mobile harbor crane.
