PROVIDENCE – Bank of America last week announced it is installing cardless technology in 5,000 ATMs throughout the country, including a handful of locations in Rhode Island.
The cardless technology allows customers to withdraw cash, make transfers and check balances using a digital wallet in smartphones, according to a press release. Earlier this year, the bank introduced the feature in Boston, Charlotte, N.C., New York City, San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The technology will be rolled out throughout the year, but has already been installed in Providence.
“Consumers are increasingly using their mobile devices to manage their daily lives, and we’re committed to delivering solutions that give them convenient and secure options when it comes to managing their money,” said Michelle Moore, head of digital banking at Bank of America. “Now in addition to using digital wallets for purchases, customers can use them to grab cash at the ATM.”
The move to cardless ATMs signals an ongoing shift to mobile banking, as the bank estimates 20 million customers now actively use its mobile banking app and the number of new accounts opened through mobile in this year’s first quarter increased 50 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the release.
The new technology is now available at the following ATMs in Providence: 167 Point St., 667 Broadway, One Providence Place and 575 Charles St.
