PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee signed a bill into law last week that will require uniform environmental standards across the state, reported the Associated Press.

Currently, state and local governments can establish different standards for wastewater treatment, coastal conservation and wetlands protection.

For businesses and property owners who want to develop land or operate septic tanks, conflicting rules cause trouble, said the news source.

The new legislation licenses a task group of state and local officials, scientists and business owners to propose statewide rules, though lawmakers will have the final say on standards.
