PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, the country’s only Independent governor, is slated to speak at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

Chafee, a former Republican, will speak on Tuesday, Sept. 4 during the convention’s opening night and is expected to discuss why he and other non-Democrats are supporting President Barack Obama.

“I am honored to be attending the 2012 Democratic National Convention,” Chafee said in prepared remarks. “President Obama has been a friend to Rhode Island, his policies have brought valuable benefits to the people of our state during historically difficult times, and I am proud to explain to the convention audience why I – a former Republican – and lots of people like me are supporting the President’s re-election.”

Chafee previously served as national co-chair of Republicans and Independents for Obama during the 2008 election and is currently a national co-chair of Obama’s re-election campaign.

The governor is slated to speak between 8:30 and 9 p.m., shortly before First Lady Michelle Obama.

Brilliant pick on the DNC's part. Rhode Island has 11+ percent unemployment, the boondoggle Wickford train station build with multi-millions in stimulus is getting, what, 10 riders per day and running $600,000+ in the red on the backs of the few of us in RI who still have jobs and pay income and property taxes. RNC, take note for advertising purposes!
