PROVIDENCE – Barbara D. Chernow has been named executive vice president for finance and administration at Brown University.
Chernow, a member of Brown’s class of 1979 and currently senior vice president for administration at Stony Brook University in New York, will join Brown March 1. She will report to President Christina H. Paxson.
A key member of the senior leadership team, Chernow will serve on the president’s cabinet and executive committee. She will succeed Beppie Huidekoper, who announced earlier this year her plans to retire in February.
As executive vice president, Chernow will be responsible for leading and directing all non-academic operations of the university, with the exception of fundraising, external affairs and information technology. She will be responsible for providing administrative and financial support to the university, and for leadership and oversight of strategic planning issues to advance the university’s mission and goals, including development of short- and long-term financial and capital plans.
She will work in partnership with the provost and other senior officers and the University Resources Committee to develop annual budget recommendations and to advise the president and the university corporation on other financial matters. Chernow will be the lead administrator working with several committees of the corporation, and she will interact regularly with faculty, managers, staff and students across the university.
Chernow began her career at Stony Brook in 1998. During her time there, she served as assistant vice president for entrepreneurial programs; assistant vice president for facilities and services; and vice president of facilities, services and special initiatives.
Since 2012, she has been senior vice president for administration. From 2007 to 2013, she was president of the Faculty Student Association, where she oversaw approximately $70 million of auxiliary services for the university, including dining, food service facility management, bookstore and retail operations and other campus service.
She received her A.B. in economics from Brown in 1979.
