PROVIDENCE – Veazie Street Elementary Principal Susan Chin was named Rhode Island’s Elementary Principal of the Year on April 26 when Mayor Angel Taveras and Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee made a surprise visit to the school.
Chin will represent Rhode Island in the National Distinguished Principals Program, a program of the National Association of Elementary School Principals that was created to recognize excellence in elementary- and middle-school leadership.
“I commend principal Chin for her leadership and commitment to education in Providence,” Taveras said. “Behind every great student is a great teacher and every great teacher is supported by a great principal.”
Chin has been with the Providence public-school district for 27 years and is in her fifth year as leader of Veazie Street. She was assigned there in 2007 to implement a restructuring plan to boost performance.
During her tenure, the percentage of students performing at a proficient level in reading went from 35 percent to 61 percent and from 25 percent to 60 percent in math. •
