Hexagon Metrology believes in rewarding the good and laying out convenient opportunities for employees to improve their physical, mental and spiritual health.
Offerings include: a workplace Health and Benefits Fair to gather biometric information scores and give out free flu shots and health information; giving cash awards for employees and spouses to get annual dental and physical exams; and putting a focused effort on getting employee input for its wellness programs.
“Our wellness programs are about improving the quality of our employees’ lives,” said Glenn Wambolt, vice president of human resources.
All indicators show that the precision-tool manufacturer’s efforts are taking hold. The company reports 1,306 total pounds lost among employees over the eight-week Lose and Win program last year. The firm was able to keep its 2014 health insurance premiums level with 2013 costs. Participation numbers are impressive, with 315 walkers organized into 33 teams for the 2013 Walking Challenge. Thirty-seven of those walkers completed more than a million steps.
“Before I started working here, I was almost completely sedentary, especially during the workday,” said Michael Mulcahy, who competed in the Walking Challenge.
The company’s also looking for ways to further expand its health and wellness initiatives. For example, a vegetable and herb garden is planned for next spring, in raised beds right on the property. Later this year, yoga classes and hula-hooping classes will be offered as well.
