Chronicle: RWU only local college where women professors make more than the men

BRISTOL – Among Rhode Island universities and colleges, only at Roger Williams University are female professors paid more than their male counterparts – and just barely.
Female professors at RWU make $119,664 compared with the average salary for male professors at $119,232. The average pay for RWU professors is $119,376, according to a report Monday in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Brown University has the highest paid professors at an average of $165,051, followed by Bryant University at $154,287, according to The Chronicle.
The Chronicle, citing data for the 2014 and 2015 school year, reported that male professors made more than female professors at Brown, $168,291 compared with $155,493.
At Bryant in Smithfield, the pattern was the same, with male professors earning an average of $159,552 and female professors, $145,053.

  • University of Rhode Island, professors, $108,243; male professors, $110,718; female professors, $102,357.
  • Stonehill College, Easton, Mass., professors, $107,505; male professors, $110,907; female professors, $94,465.
  • University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, professors, $118,377; male professors, $121,185; female professors, $113,022.

The full report, which states that business, law and engineering professors draw the highest salaries among faculty members who have tenure or are on the tenure track, can be found HERE.
The Chronicle cited data from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, which conducts the annual salary survey. That survey was based on the 2015 and 2016 academic year.
It found that the overall median salary increase for faculty members was 2 percent.
