PROVIDENCE – Former Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci Jr. said Wednesday he will run for the city’s top office again, this time as an independent.

The announcement came on Cianci’s afternoon radio show on WPRO, 630-AM, 99.7-FM, just before the deadline for candidates to file the necessary paperwork to appear on the November ballot.

If elected, Cianci, 73, would begin his third stint as mayor after serving from 1975 to 1984, and from 1991 to 2002. He is the city’s longest-serving mayor.

On both occasions he resigned from office, first after pleading no contest to assault charges and then in 2002 after being convicted on a federal racketeering charge.

  1. Is galling an overstatement? He betrays the trusts of his constituents, twice — just counting felony convictions here. And he really thinks that people are ignorant, and small minded, enough to elect him again? Let’s hope we have come further than that.
