Robert Matthews, Citizens Financial Group Commercial Banking vice chairman, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack Friday. He was 51.
Bruce Van Saun, chairman and CEO of Citizens Financial Group, released a statement Friday morning announcing Matthews’ death.
“Our entire Citizens Financial Group family of colleagues mourns this tragic loss and our thought and prayers are with Catherine, Robert’s wife, and his family. We share this grief and extend to them our deepest sympathies,” Van Saun said in a statement.
Van Saun touted Matthews’ background leading the company with an “incredible energy and a passion to succeed.” Matthews’ colleagues Steve Woods, currently head of Corporate Banking, and Bob Rubino, head of Corporate Finance and Capital Markets, will co-head Commercial Banking in the interim, according to a Citizens Financial Group press release.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine, and their two daughters, Nicole and Campbell.
