PROVIDENCE – The Committee on City Property tentatively approved the sale of an 8.5-acre parcel to Rhode Island College for $250,000, but the property first needs to go out to bid, according to the city clerk’s office.
The committee met Wednesday night to approve the proposed sale of the landlocked property the college is currently leasing from the city for use as a playing field, according to Assistant City Clerk Tina Masproianni.
Since the land is considered open space, the city charter requires that it go through a bidding process under the Providence Board of Contract and Supply before being sold, Masproianni said.
It is unclear whether the property would go out to bid before or after being referred to the full city council’s next meeting on July 17, she said.
“The land will allow RIC to upgrade and expand its athletic and recreational facilities in the future,” explained Laura Hart, RIC’s director of college communications and marketing, in an email. “In keeping with its mission, RIC is also hopeful that this additional space will spur the growth of recreational activities for city youth.”
The property is identified on the committee agenda as Plat 129, Lot 1, behind Pleasant View Elementary School, the assistant clerk said.
