Clarendon Court sells for $13.1M

NEWPORT – Clarendon Court, the Cliff Walk mansion and former home of Claus and Sunny von Bulow, has sold for $13.1 million, the highest price in the state this year, listing agent Paul A. Leys of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty announced.

The 7.2-acre property at 626 Bellevue Ave. was sold by Glenn C. Randall, who bought it in 1988.

The name of the buyer was not disclosed.

The sale is the second-largest in Newport history, according to Leys, coming in behind the $17.1 sale of the “Miramar” mansion, also on Bellevue Avenue.

Clarendon Court was built in 1904 for Philadelphia sugar and railroad magnate Edward C. Knight and includes 10 bedrooms and eight and a half bathrooms, according to the property listing.

In addition to the 12,800-square-foot mansion, the property includes a two-story limestone and brick carriage house. It was listed for $15.8 million.

Sunny von Bulow was found unconscious at the mansion in 1980. Her husband Claus was accused of putting her in a coma with an insulin injection and was tried twice for attempted murder. He was acquitted in 1985.
