WARWICK – The Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum, a private home that is operated as a nonprofit historical house museum, held a celebration recently to unveil a plaque marking its inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.

The house, originally known as Cedar Hill, was built between 1871 and 1877 as a wedding gift for Elizabeth Ives Slater on her marriage to Alfred Augustus Reed Jr. It remains in the same family, and has been passed down through generations of Slater women.

The granite, three-and-a-half-story mansion was designed by the Providence firm, William Walker & Sons, which also was the architect for Warwick City Hall and numerous armories in Rhode Island.

Overlooking Greenwich Bay, it is extraordinarily preserved and the last large estate of the industrial era that remains in the Cowesett area, according to the R.I. Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission.

The Gothic revival mansion includes four gabled pavilions and an elaborate wraparound porch, the commission description states. The interior features late Victorian woodwork, carvings, trim and paintwork, and the 28-acre site features plantings and additional buildings that contribute to its historical value.
