Coalition launching smoking-cessation programs

WOONSOCKET – Greater Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition plans to launch three new free smoking-cessation programs to help residents of Rhode Island lead tobacco-free lives, buttressed by a $10,000 grant from the CVS Health Foundation.
The Greater Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition is a collaboration of the Cumberland, Lincoln, North Smithfield, Pawtucket and Woonsocket coalitions. Each is made up of an organized group of community leaders striving to develop, implement and advocate for effective community-based prevention initiatives.
The CVS Health Foundation provides smoking cessation grants to leading health care and community partners that are working to promote tobacco-free communities, provide programs that help people quit smoking and help those who don’t smoke to never start.
“CVS Health is committed to working with organizations in our local communities that share our purpose of helping people on their path to better health,” said Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Health Foundation. “We are proud to support the launch of the Greater Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition’s smoking cessation programs.”
During the six-week classes, participants will learn the tools they need to quit smoking.
“With the support we are receiving from the CVS Health Foundation, we hope to provide individuals who want to quit smoking with the resources they need to help them quit for good,” said Lisa M. Carcifero, executive director of the Woonsocket Prevention Coalition. “We are proud to launch this new program and hope that members of our local community who want to quit smoking will take advantage of this free resource.”
Interested individuals regardless of income or insurance can join the free program by contacting the program’s tobacco treatment specialist at 401-766-3332. The specialist will provide program specifics and conduct a screening questionnaire.
Classes will be held at 6 p.m. at the following locations and dates: Pawtucket Public Library, May 26; Cumberland Public Library, May 28; and Woonsocket Public Library, June 1.
