Coastal Cleanup seeks volunteers

More than 2,100 volunteers are needed to participate in Rhode Island’s International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 19.
Volunteers are also needed for smaller cleanups on Sept. 12, 26 and 27 and on Oct. 18.
Individual volunteers, families, and large groups are invited to help collect trash and debris at more than 80 beach locations.
“It really takes the talents and support of our dedicated beach captains, individuals, other non-profit organizations and private companies to make the International Coastal Cleanup successful,” said July Lewis, Save The Bay’s volunteer manager. “And this is a great opportunity for individual, families and businesses to make a real difference and a strong statement: it’s not okay to trash our bay.”
Sites that need more volunteers include the Charlestown Breachway in Charlestown, Sachuest Point and Third Beach in Middletown, Aunt Carrie’s Beach and Ferry Beach in Narragansett, and Compass Rose Beach in North Kingstown.
Also needing more help are: Easton’s Beach, Fort Adams, King Park and Kings Beach in Newport, North Kingstown Beach in North Kingstown, Common Fence Point and Weaver Cove in Portsmouth, Oxford Street at Allen’s Avenue in Providence, Grinnell’s Beach in Tiverton, Oakland Beach in Warwick and Weekapaug Breachway in Westerly.
Other sites across the state are still accepting volunteers.
Save The Bay is also looking for volunteers to help identify and clean up micro-sites – hidden gems that may otherwise go unnoticed because they are small.
The International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Washington, D.C.-based Ocean Conservancy, is the largest global volunteer effort on behalf of the ocean.

The cleanup also features support from local business and corporations offering financial support and volunteer teams who participate in cleanups. Citizens Bank is the event signature sponsor with a $25,000 donation and cleanups at Colt State Park, Scarborough Beach, Rocky Point, and Salters Grove.
