(Updated 1 p.m.) NEWPORT – College Ranker has released a list of the 50 most beautiful wedding venues on college campuses, and Salve Regina University’s Ochre Court is No. 5.
College Ranker, which rates all aspects of college life, said it released the list in “the spirit of Valentine’s Day,” and said that Ochre Court architect Richard Morris Hunt drew his inspiration for the mansion’s exterior – touches that include high roofs, turrets, gargoyles and tell chimneys – from the late medieval period in French architecture.
The interior features a great hall, ground floor reception rooms and private family rooms.
“Ochre Court is consistently cited as one of the most beautiful mansions in Rhode Island, and is open to the public for wedding receptions and ceremonies,” the website states.
In creating the ranking, College Ranker considered historical appeal, external and internal architectural features, and the natural beauty of surroundings.
“Historic Ochre Court and Salve Regina’s entire 80-acre campus has the power to inspire. Whether it’s the students who live and learn here, the faculty and staff who teach and work here, or the hundreds of thousands of people who discover our campus while strolling the famed Cliff Walk, it is no surprise so many are choosing to return here for their weddings,” Matthias Boxler, university spokesperson, wrote in an email.
No. 1 was the United States Air Force Academy, Cadet Chapel in El Paso County, Colo.; No. 2 was St. Francis Xavier College Church and Xavier Grand Ballroom, St. Louis University, Missouri; No. 3 was the Baughman Center at University of Florida, and No. 4, Hampshire College’s Red Barn in Amherst, Mass.
Said Mackenzi Flannery, author of the list: “It’s natural to think of colleges as educational centers first and foremost, but people should be careful not to overlook them when planning a special event like a wedding. Many schools have breathtaking settings that can accommodate large groups, and the best of them have longstanding and romantic history that you just don’t find in other places.”
