PROVIDENCE – R.I. Commerce Corp. has selected a new chief marketing officer – native Rhode Islander Lara Salamano.
According to a Commerce RI news release, she will start the position on July 11.

“As a Rhode Islander, the opportunity to share Rhode Island’s story with the world was an opportunity I could not miss,” Salamano said in a statement. “Rhode Island has an untold number of treasures, from our lively history as shown at Gaspee Days to our world-class culinary experiences, and I look forward to working with [Commerce Secretary Stefan] Pryor, the Commerce team, and the regional tourism bureaus to share Rhode Island’s compelling narrative.”

Salamano will lead the statewide marketing campaign to bring more tourists and more businesses to Rhode Island. Her salary was not released.
Pryor said Salamano’s marketing experience, combined with her passion for Rhode Island, “are what we need for these efforts.”

The last marketing director, Besty Wall, resigned April 1 after an uproar over the rollout of the largely disliked – and since abandoned – Rhode Island Cooler & Warmer tourism slogan.
Salamano’s LinkedIn page says she is based in East Greenwich and works at New York City-based Pop, a joint venture of CBS Corp. and Lionsgate, as a vice president for partner marketing. She has held the job since 2013. She previously worked for MTV Networks and Nickelodeon.
She also is a 1992 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, according to the profile.
